What to expect during a treatment with me...

During your first Bowen session I will take a full case history of your past and present health problems, including any accidents and injuries, and discuss any concerns you have. Please leave 90 mins of your time free for this (subsequent treatments will usually take 45-60mins). I also ask that you drink plenty of water before and after a session so you're hydrated.

I ask the client to lie on a massage couch, or they can be seated in a chair if they are unable to lay on the couch, the work can be carried out through light clothing - vest and shorts are ideal as I prefer to work on skin to get direct feed back from your skin, physically & visually, but I'm happy to work within the comfort zones of my clients, but I cannot work through jeans or tight clothing.

You will be draped at all times with a soft blanket to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed. There is no uneccesary stimuli in the form of music played in the background, this is so your brain can focus soley on the information that's being transmitted. The treament itself consists of gentle rolling movements, regular breaks are incorporated to allow the body to respond to the treatment.

Often, people fall into deep relaxation, and 'rubbling' noises are heard from the tummy area, both these occurances are your body releasing from stress, to a shift towards parasympathetic dominance.

There is little conversing that goes on during the treatment as this is time for your body to get to work, although feedback is welcome and beneficial regarding your comfort level and any sensations you're experiencing.

Each treatment is tailored to your individual requirements at the time. The Bowen Technique focuses on the whole body rather than just specific areas of concern, this allows underlying causes and presenting symptoms to be addressed.

Bowen can be deeply relaxing and it is common to notice sensations such as tingling, or increased heat or energy moving through the body during a treatment. Afterwards it is not unusual to feel very relaxed.

How many treatments will I need?...

1-4 treatments around a week apart can usually provide long lasting relief and benefits, some more problemetic/chronic conditions may need more treatments in order to address the underlying cause, but the choice is entirely yours.
In some cases relief from symptoms may be experienced after the first visit, others may take longer, depending on the condition presented. New injuries usually respond pretty quick to Bowen therapy as the body hasn't had time to compensate. Many choose to have periodic 'top ups', once their issue is under control, kind of an 'M.O.T for the body, but this is entirely up to the client.

It maybe that you simply need Bowen to de-stress, relax and keep your body on an even keel, as and when you feel you need it. If only we looked after our bodies like we do our cars, which we give regular maintenance to help keep them ticking over nicely and minimising the chance of them breaking down! After all, we only have one body and no 'spares' as a back-up!

Treatment is suitable for all ages from newborn to the elderly, including pregnant ladies.

Aftercare advice...

I will give you written information, but in summary :

  • After your bowen treatment it is important to drink plenty of water to help flush toxins out of the body, 2l per day is ideal. In the days following a Bowen treatment try not to sit still for more than 30 minutes at a time. A little walk around the room to have a stretch is all that is required to keep things flowing.

  • Responses to Bowen treatment may be experienced, include headaches, hot and cold flushes emotional releases, tiredness, body aches and pains and increased thirst. These responses usually clear after a few days and are all positive signs that the healing process is working.

  • Avoid hot baths/showers, saunas ect...anything that over heats the body.

  • If you have had work done on your jaw or neck, please try to supress yawning and over extending the jaw.

  • Do not stop prescribed medication without consulting with your doctor, even if you feel better, please consult them before adjusting medication.

  • Please avoid other therapies for 7 days either side of your treatment/s whilst recieving Bowen therapy. Bowen needs time to work on your body without interuption. Mixing other treatments such as  massage, acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic, reflexology & physiotherapy, with The Bowen Technique will undermine the overall effectiveness and limit the possible beneficial responses you may have.

  • Homeopathy is the only exception to this rule as it works well when combined with Bowen Therapy
